The other day I was thinking about the food stores I keep in my car. My concerns are temperature changes and the effects on my food (botulism). Inside my car the temperature range from below freezing to over 120 degrees. My plan for the past ten years was to purchase a 2 week supply of canned foods and every six months rotate out my supplies. I wasn't worried about the weight, after all my plan was to shelter in place and head for home or my BOL when the smoke clears. I had canned pastas, chili, stews, soups, fruits, hard candies, electrolyte drink powders and other goodies. I also had a three day supply of MREs in my BOB if I had to make a run for it. Yes, I even rotated my MREs for good measure. This wasn't a cheep but I knew I had to keep a fresh supply of food ready at all times.
Just the other day I came up with a new plan for my car food cache. I purchased a Styrofoam shipping container (inside measurements 11.75x8.25x8) with insulated 1.5" wall thickness all wrapped in a durable cardboard box. I bought a case of fresh MREs and removed them from their protective outer plastic pouch. I was able to place all twelve meals and all of the accessories (less the heaters) in my box with a little room for a few rolls of life savers.
Now, to confirm how wacked I am. I've purloined my wife's oven temperature probe and placed the sensor in the center of the food cache. It's an electronic probe with a long cable. I've sealed everything and placed the box in the back storage area of my SUV. I will be able to monitor the temperature differences from inside the box and the outside temperatures of the environment. I should be able to predict how long my food will remain safe to eat.
Does anyone have any thoughts or advice? How do all of you keep your "car" food safe to eat?
