Firearm safety should be everyone’s top priority. Even in time of crisis there should be firearm safety rules. The rules I have laid out here are similar to many you may find on the web. Please add more if you can think of anything I’ve missed.
RULE #1 – You must assume that all guns are loaded, until you have personally checked the weapon. If you set the weapon down, you MUST recheck the weapon each and every time you pick up that gun.
Note: Laziness leads to complacency; complacency leads to accidental discharge; and accidental discharge may lead to the death of an innocent.
RULE #2 - Never point the muzzle of your gun at anything you are not prepared to destroy. Do not allow any firearm to be pointed at you or another “living” human. This is a deadly threat and should always be treated as such. Never let a person point a gun at you accidentally or “in fun” either. Some things are just wrong.
RULE #3 - Keep your finger off the trigger until your sights are on the target and you are ready to shoot.
Note: The trigger of a firearm can be activated accidentally with relatively little pressure (7 to 8 pounds of pressure for military and police weapons and as little as 2 pounds or less for competition style weapons.)
RULE #4 - Be sure of your target and everything behind your target. Never shoot at anything until you have positively identified it and never fire at a shadow, or a sound, or a suspected presence. Shoot only when you are absolutely certain what you are shooting at and beyond.
RULE #5 - Always Be Careful and Safe.
WARNING: Every firearm is loaded until you prove otherwise and NEVER trust the safety!
